Scalp Psoriasis
Scalp psoriasis is an extremely difficult skin condition to deal with especially when affecting the scalp. It is quite likely that you are reading this site as you suffer from scalp psoriasis and cannot cope with the constant itching and flaking skin on the shoulders.
You are not alone. There are an enormous amount of sufferers of scalp psoriasis who are having the same problem. The first issue is to read through all the information on the various websites and decide what is the right course of action. If I was to tell you that there are many so called experts who offer potions and lotions and in some cases guarantees to remove scalp psoriasis! There fees are high and the results in most cases are fruitless.
The first thing to understand about scalp psoriasis is that it is a chronic skin disease that can present itself in many different forms depending on which part of the body. When discussing scalp psoriasis, the appearance tends to be easily recognised as described below.
What is scalp Psoriasis?
Scalp psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that causes the skin to thicken producing silver/white or yellow scales. Psoriasis affects approx 3% of the population. Scalp psoriasis shows no affiliation to gender, race or skin colour and is not contagious but can be passed on genetically. Nails may be affected whereby they may become brittle, loosen or present pitting.
Why does the skin flake?
Scalp psoriasis causes the skin cells to proliferate (creation of the cell to destruction) up to 10 times faster that what should be expected from normal skin. A normal skin cycle would take approx 30 days during which time the skin cells should travel through 5 layers of the Epidermis. In the normal skin cycle the cells would go through a number of processes eventually after the 30 or so days leave the skins and die. In cases of psoriasis the flaky skin present is a mixture of live and dead skin cells which have clumped together.
Arthritis often accompanies scalp psoriasis along with other functional disabilities. The Arthritis would in most cases improve along with the skin. Recurrences may be seasonal and may be associated with reduced natural sunlight. The cause of psoriasis is unknown, but research suggests white blood cell abnormalities trigger rapid skin cell proliferation and exfoliation.
Treating Scalp Psoriasis
There is no cure for scalp psoriasis however, with the correct advice and treatment, scalp psoriasis may well go into remission. Your GP may well have prescribed a series of steroids or shampoos which may have helped however the most effective method of treating scalp psoriasis is to remove the crusty skin and calm the underlying skin thus slowing down the cell proliferation.
Shampoos and creams alone are not able in most cases to perform such an important task. Our team at HT-Healthcare specialise is such a process. Our methods have been tried and tested for over 40 years with great success in controlling scalp psoriasis. Our methods are safe and effective in offering a solution to control and manage scalp psoriasis removing that irresistible urge to scratch and leading to skin healing.
Home Care Products
We understand that with such a condition, return visits are likely to the practice in order to facilitate the correct control measures. Although as previously stated, simple shampoos and creams are not going to deal with scalp psoriasis alone, the usage of certain products available at the surgery at home will in due course limit the time in which a return visit is necessary.
Word of warning
Under no circumstances should the removal of the crusting be attempted! If the skin is not set correctly, the risk of exacerbation is high along with secondary infection. Professional treatment is the only recognised solution.
