Welcome to our information page on non surgical hair replacement systems and hair pieces. This page outlines the process of obtaining a new hair system. Please note, we offer a free consultation which can be conducted over the telephone or in person if you wish. Please give the helpline a ring and you will be able to speak with a trichologist who will advise you.
Non Surgical Hair Replacement systems or hair pieces have in the past been frowned upon due to their unrealistic look and difficulty in maintenance. However, in today's market, non surgical hair replacement systems are now considered to be one of the most viable and appropriate options to combat male and female pattern baldness. Modern hair systems are virtually undetectable, as they are created on an individual basis to suit the patients needs and use only 100% human hair that is perfectly matched to the patient's natural hair.
One question I am often asked is "if I have this system, will everyone know that I have a hair piece on as it looks so much thicker?".
Non surgical hair replacement systems are designed to provide the patient the density of his or her choice. Some patients prefer to opt for a medium density system initially and increase the hair density on subsequent systems to create the appearance of gradual re growth. The choice is yours.
So how does non surgical hair replacement work?
The patient would be invited to our London Clinic to have a template taken of the area of concern. This is to ensure an exact fit. Other considerations such as type of hair (mongoloid, caucasoid or afroid), and hair style (curl or wave etc) location of parting or crown etc are noted. Non Surgical hair replacement systems can be matched almost perfectly to the current style of the patient which makes them virtually undetectable.
The patient decides on thickness and style, ensuring the desired appearance. Once this has been decided the mould, which serves as a template, is sent away for the hair replacement system to be made. A sample of the patient's own hair is also taken to ensure the hair texture and colour match is perfect.
So how is the non surgical hair replacement system designed?
A thin transparent layer of polyurethane is attached to the scalp, which forms a tight membrane which acts as a second layer of skin. This membrane contains the previously implanted hair (human) which would have been individually knotted or injected into the membrane. The non surgical hair replacement system is fixed to the skin on a semi-permanent basis allowing the patient to go about their daily routine not concerned that the hair piece will blow off when the wind blows or prevent such activities as swimming or exercise. When affixed to the scalp the non surgical hair replacement system remains resilient to sweat and water and allows the skin to breath naturally.

The transparent polyurethane membrane, often called liquid skin, permits the underlying skin to be visible, which creates a natural appearance at the crown and when parting the hair. Modern non surgical hair replacement techniques bond the system to the scalp with a translucent, hypoallergenic medical adhesive, providing a skin tight adhesion around the perimeter of the hair system.
How do I maintain my non surgical hair replacement system?
The patient's hair will naturally continue to grow hence the requirement to attend the clinic every 4 weeks to have the non surgical hair replacement system to be removed, cleaned, the scalp hair shaved again and the hair system re-attached to the skin. During this time our specialist will re cut the surrounding hair to blend perfectly with the system.
What type of membrane should I have?
The most advanced membrane systems available in today's market are polyurethane, monofilament and lace.
Polyurethane provides a transparent, thin layer and is probably the most undetectable in terms of sight and touch.
Monofilament is porous and is generally preferred by those requiring a breathable material.
Lace softens the appearance of the frontal hair line and gives the appearance of hair growing from the skin when brushed from the frontal region.
Synthetic hair is available but we only deal with natural human hair! Care should be taken when styling any non surgical hair replacement system. Like any type of hair, it is susceptible to damage by chemical or physical processes such as relaxing, perming, or the use of straightening irons. Synthetic hair is likely to burn or melt under such circumstances.
Please note that creating a natural look for the period away from the clinic may only be conducted by a specialist stylist. There is a significant difference in technique when 'cutting in' a non surgical hair replacement system compared with that of normal hair trimming.
It should be noted that a single hair piece will last for up to 1 year taking into consideration the use and type of lifestyle the patient has. Consideration should be taken when considering the non surgical hair replacement systems with long term costs. In most cases replacing the system every 6-8 months tends to be an appropriate time to avoid any discoloration due to weathering and possible shedding over time.
