Male Pattern Baldness
Androgenetic Alopecia (aka AGA or male pattern baldness) is a common condition that may affect men from an early age. Male pattern Baldness is associated with the conversion of testosterone (androgen) into dyhydrotestosterone (DHT) by the 5 alpha reductase enzyme. Both genetic predisposition and Dyhydrotestosterone (DHT) are factors causing cyclical hair reduction of the growth phase (anagen) leading to progressive hair miniaturisation (the follicle shrinks). This process reverses the growth phase leading to the production of vellus hair similar to that when you are born. In some cases regional hair such as that of the occiput or auricular margins may alter in texture and structure leading to wavy or wiry hair.
Genetically either:
i) dominant - a single gene of inheritance.
ii) polygenic - multi gene inheritance.
Who is more likely to suffer from Male pattern Baldness?
Although male pattern baldness may affect men of all types, caucasoid's are more likely to be affected. Eunuchs in most cases are no affected.
Research into Male Pattern Baldness:
Spironolactone which is an anti androgen medication is being looked to as a possible treatment which would be administered topically. It appears to be an effective anti androgen yet does not seem to interfere with proper testosterone levels. It is suggested that when applied topically it does not lead to systemic side effects. spirononlactone effectively prevents DHT from attaching to the receptor sites within the hair follicle thus preventing the follicle from shrinking. The anticipated increase of the follicular anagen is apparent causing terminal hair growth to resume without reducing the levels of DHT.
What are the current treatments available?
Medicines which may assist some people - not everyone !
I - Finasteride (Propecia)
2 - Minoxidil (Regaine)
3 - Dutasteride (Avodart)
