Dandruff (Pityriasis Simplex Capitas)

What is Dandruff?

Dandruff is a well know name signifying a scaly scalp that often results in irritation and the unsightly white flakes on the clothing. In a simple context 'Dandruff' will allude to Pityriasis Simplex Capitis (syn. pityriasis sicca) a non-inflammatory scalp condition which presents as exfoliation of the outer layers of the Stratum Corneum (outer layer of epidermal cells) due to the presence of Pityrosporon Ovale (syn P. Mallasez). Bacteria, products and lack of hygiene can exacerbate the condition.

Human skin manufactures and sheds cells continually in vast numbers. Clothing often assists in removing dead cells. Scalp hair contains these exfoliated cells which may articulate to form scales. Hair may act as a barrier and cause scales to remain on the scalp. Pruritis (Irritation) may occur in some cases. Where irritation is present in case of dandruff secondary infection may occur.

Dandruff shows no affiliation to race or skin colour. Please note that dandruff may be a symptom of a more sinister scalp disease. Professional advice should be sought in all cases of prolonged dandruff, especially where irritation or discomfort is experienced. Hair shedding may occur due to skin swelling and follicular discomfort.

Treating Dandruff

Medicated shampoos may be used to treat dandruff which can be bought over the counter or from prescription from your GP. However, some forms of dandruff may well require treatment to remove the crusting and calm the underlying skin. Dandruff in most cases can be controlled. Treatment can be highly effective, but should be regarded as managing the condition rather than the cure.

We have two methods of treating dandruff. Firstly, removal of the scales using our trichological techniques is necessary to allow access to the underlying skin. The next stage is slowing the cell proliferation. This can be achieved in most cases.

A Homeopathic remedy can be offered as an alternative or can work in conjunction with the above.

If you would like to arrange a consultation please contact the helpline. Remember, dandruff may well be a symptom of a more serious condition. Advice should be sought if you are concerned.
