So what is Atopic Dermatitis?

Atopic Dermatitis is quite common, affecting the younger generation more so than adults. Both males and females are equally affected. Atopic Dermatitis tends to begin during the first few months of life presenting symptoms which include: weeping and a crusting scalp, erythema affecting both facial and scalp regions including the groin also. Children may well show remission however the skin may well stay dry and irritated.

Research suggests that an estimated 10% of children experience some symptoms of atopic dermatitis. Approx. 65% of atopic dermatitis cases start during the first year with approx. 90% by the fifth year. Approx. 60% of all cases present exacerbation.

Atopic conditions such as hayfever and asthma in other family members make children more susceptible. The risk is increased where both parents suffer such an atopic ailment. It is likely that if one twin suffers from atopic dermatitis, there is an 80-90% chance of the other also suffering from such a condition.

Who is likely to be affected by atopic dermatitis?

During adolescence and adulthood, atopic dermatitis would tend to become lichenified and localised. The eyelids, scalp, neck, wrists and hands tend to be the most common regions affected. Blisters may become apparent and rupture becoming infected. Cracking around the ears in cases of atopic dermatitis is common. The often remains dry and scaly and even after remission the likelihood of reoccurrence is high. Age tends to aid recovery and remission. Similarities are seen in cases of cradle cap affecting infants, seborrhoeic dermatitis and forms of contact dermatitis. These conditions show remarkable resemblance in some cases and incorrect diagnosis to the untrained eye is very common.

Removing the cause may not promote remission except in infants. Experts have shown that patients tend to have a high serum level of IgE antibodies; however the significance has yet to be confirmed. Stress factors associated with atopic dermatitis should be well considered especially in those that are unable to self manipulate such as infants or those who suffer from disabilities.

The important thing to remember is any skin condition such as atopic dermatitis is that correct diagnosis is essential. Treating the condition incorrectly can be dangerous. Self diagnosis should not be attempted.
