ANOREXIA
Anorexia Nervosa - presence as a chronic eating disorder that tends to affect adolescent females. However, this is not exclusive. Males may also be affected by Anorexia. Obsession with weight and self image are common factors. Extreme dieting to the point of emaciation is not uncommon. Other factors include those patients that feel eating in not necessary, or a feeling that food is boring! The patient does not recognise the condition as problem in most cases. Often the patient will not see a problem with their lack of eating.
Sufferers of anorexia tend to be underweight for their age and height. Amenorrhea (the absence of 3 or more successive menstrual periods) may occur.
Those that suffer from anorexia may well suffer hair shedding. The rate of which varies from unnoticeable losses to wide spread hair loss. This is due to the body not taking the valuable nutrients that are required thus putting the body in a state of shut down resulting in hair loss. Liver damage may well be apparent along with high cholestrol (due to deposits in the blood).
The anorexic's self-esteem is enhanced by weight losses, but reduced significantly following weight gain. This may be an imaginative increse. Weight gain may be perceived as failure of self control.
Causes of Anorexia
Stress - is a major cause of anorexia. This may be associated with criticism from others in the form of bullying at school Social pressures - which may include requirements to loose weight for those involved in the modeling industry.
Those who suffer anorexia may well recover within a short space of time. However, anorexia tends to be a chronic condition that get worse the longer the patient suffers. Hospital care may be required in severe cases.
Anorexia may be life threatening. Advice from your GP should be sought at the earliest opportunity.Anorexia results in malnutrition over a period of time and loss of vital salts (potassium and sodium) from fluids within the body and tissue.
