Afro hair is quite different than that of caucasoid (White European) and mongoloid (Asian) hair types. The hair shaft itself has a different shape and is in most cases considerably weaker than that of the others.
There are many forms of hair shaft defects, hair loss conditions and scalp issues. We have listed some basic information that will in most cases assist in keeping your hair and scalp healthy.
Hygiene -
Afro hair may well feel dry and rough- often encouraging infrequent washing with the scalp suffering the consequences. The scalp play host to a natural yeast bacillus. Failure to control this adequately can result in the bacillus multiplying, which may lead to irritation, inflammation or secondary disease. Cleansing of afro scalp & hair is not an easy process. This essential procedure requires excessive rinsing and care to remove all detergent and conditioning treatments.
Rinsing - The requirement to rinse afro scalp & hair throughly should not be overlooked. In order to remove all traces of detergent a rinsing for 10-15 minutes is advisable for those with an average compliment of hair. This time would increase as with longer and thicker density of afro hair.
Contact reactions are common with those that do not rinse thoroughly and correctly. This may occur gradually over a period of time.
Symptoms may include: pruritis (irritation), erythema (inflammation) and the presence of scales (commonly known as 'dandruff'). There is no 'right' or 'wrong' answer to the question "How often should I shampoo?". You need to establish a routine that cleanses your scalp adequately. I would suggest that once a fortnight is not sufficient to clease the afro scalp sufficiently.
Scalp diseases - Hygiene alone will not solve all hair/scalp problems. It is advisable if you are concerned about a hair or scalp condition you should see professional advice.
Treatments - Most afro scalp disorders can be treated. The key is to remove the dry flaky scales that are present and calm the underlying skin. This is a relatively simple process for our team. This may well sort the condition for you after one visit. However, due to processing and hygeine restrictions, often follow up visits are needed from time to time in order to prevent this occuring again. Home Treatments
Home Treatment - We have a variety of home care products however, we must first see the patient in order to diagnose the condition and then we would advise on a course of treatment. Remember, most conditions can be controlled with the right advice and if appropriate the right treatment.
